We all know that words are powerful. Words have the
ability to convince, motivate and move us to action. That is why the apostle Paul spends time
talking about the importance of how we as Christ followers steward and use our
words -- both our vertical words to God and our horizontal words to each other. Click the image or here to watch the sermon video.

In Colossians 3:22-4:1, Paul is reshaping the oikos – the social world of the church around the gospel of Jesus. In addressing slaves and masters, those at the bottom and the top of the social spectrum of the day, Paul elevates the worth of the powerless by recalling the image of God in everyone, and he compels the service of those who are powerful. As the church, we are called to serve the least and the lost and to value people who are made in the image of God, starting right in our own oikos. Click the image or here to watch the sermon video.

Last week Paul told us what to take off. This week he tells us what to put on as God’s chosen, holy and beloved. We are to put on the spiritual clothing that will ultimately bring unity – as Paul would say, a perfect harmony among those in the church. Click the image or here to watch the sermon video.

In Colossians 3, Paul writes that we have been raised with Christ, and we should give our thinking, our talking and our walking lives to resurrection living. He says if we are to do that, there are some things we have to put off; some things to which we have been crucified in Christ. The key question we ask is “What are the ideas, philosophies, practices, triggers that give life to the things that draw us away from God?" Paul said by God’s grace and resurrecting power, put them to death, because they are killing the life of Christ in us. And so we dare to ask God to remake us, and by his grace, we take off yesterday’s clothes to be clothed with Christ. Click here to access the sermon audio.

The Apostle Paul spends time in chapter two revealing the heart of the false teachers. In eight verses he describes their asceticism, mysticism and legalism. All of it Paul says are mere shadows while the substance belongs to Jesus Christ! Can we discern the spiritual shadows in our lives? Click on the image or here to watch the sermon.

In Colossians 2, the Apostle Paul challenges the church to continue to grow in Jesus by putting down roots into the gospel. He warns them to not just add Jesus to their lives but to make him the authority of their lives. When we try to add Jesus to our lives, we'll struggle to fit him into our lives, our agendas and our plans. But when Jesus is the authority of our lives, he will inform and shape the way we live out every aspect of our lives. The question is: Who's in charge? Click on the image or here to watch the sermon.

Almost every aspect of our lives includes some kind of goal that we are aiming at – from the most mundane to the more complicated. The same could be said about church because we have a goal in mind when we enter – for the kids, because I have to, for the music, for the friends, etc. But for the Apostle Paul, the goal of what he is aiming at for the church in Colossae is to present them mature in Christ. “How can I pray for you?” This is a very personal question that pushes past thoughts and opinions to what is happening in our heart, and what we want God to enter in and help. The Apostle Paul in Colossians 1 gives us a look into the prayer he prayed for his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that they would be filled with a knowledge of God’s will. What an example for us two thousand years later to pray. Click on the image or here to watch the sermon.

This week we begin a new journey through the book of Colossians. A letter sent to this little town in decline that was to grow them in their faith in Jesus Christ, to challenge them in their love for one another and to encourage them in their hope for heaven. May this voice speak life into our church this fall. Click on the image or here to watch the sermon.
